Talking Darjeeling Tea Today Darling

darjeeling

Darjeeling, from the foothills of the Himalayas, is one of India’s most famous tea-growing regions and now is the time for First Flush!

Darjeeling itself is a rather small region between India’s borders with Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.  Tea leaves have been thriving her since the 1800’s.

In Darjeeling tea is still harvested by hand, with two leaves and a bud as standard.  It’s nickname as “the world’s greatest tea” is accurate!

First Flush Darjeeling is a pale gold with a hint of green and floral and grassy notes. Second Flush is a little coppery and mellow and fruity in taste

Autumnal Flush is an auburn with smoky spicy hints.

My favorites in the Darjeeling Teas are Taylors of Harrogate and Harney & Sons. One loose leaf and one sachet for travels.

Try some now while Harney & Sons are having a great sale!

Darjeeling! One of my favorites and I was interested to see this information on it. I go the Algerian Coffee store in London and get the Darjeeling . But I never really knew the differences between the “flushes”. Thank you.

There is actually another Darjeeling flush, called “Monsoon Flush” because the leaves are picked just after the monsoon season, in September. Due to the heavy rains preceding this harvest, the leaves grow very fast. The result is a fairly bland cup. Monsoon flush Darjeeling is therefore normally used as part of blends, but it is still interesting to taste it on its own to understand the impact of seasonality on the tea.

If you (or anyone else for that matter) is interested in learning more about tea, we are about to launch a tea tasting programme designed by certified tea sommeliers to help people discover many high quality teas and at the same time understand how terroir, plant variety and manufacturing process affect their taste. It’s a fascinating journey, if you’re interested leave us your email address at http://www.tastefortea.com (no commitments, don’t worry) so we can let you know when we’re live. The service will be available to UK residents only initially.

I LOVE Darjeeling! And when I drink it, I love quoting Buzz Lightyear in the first Toy Story:
“One minute you’re defending the whole galaxy, and, suddenly, you find yourself sucking down Darjeeling with Marie Antoinette and her little sister.”
