A Winning Tea, A Won Book, and Crohn’s

This is such a lovely tea. A soft peach aroma with a back note of ginger. Not overpowering in the least. And you can’t beat it for upset tummies! And around here that is a constant.

I was having a conversation yesterday with my Crohn’s support group. It was my turn to tell my story so I decided to share it with all of you. I was first diagnosed with Celiac. It’s a simple blood test. I tried to not eat things I couldn’t digest but it was hard when no one eats the way you do. By October of 2013, I was getting worse every day. Pain and stress were an everyday thing. Until December 1st came around. The last straw for me was my boss asking me to lie and backdate a legal document. Instead, I resigned immediately.

It was right before Christmas when I woke up vomiting blood and in hideous pain. After a quick surgery, I had to start over with friendly food and no stress. The first week all I could digest was small pieces of banana. One banana over 3 days. This caused me to lose weight very fast. I am 5 foot 11 inches. I weighed around 85 pounds. I was wearing a size O with two or three pairs of leggings under my jeans. I could count my ribs. It was scary and my hair started to fall out, which wasn’t that bad since I had enough for 3 people, but the folks vacuuming it up hated it! So I started my own way of eating. I introduce a small amount and if it doesn’t make me ill I will put it in the rotation. After a few years on steroids, I was able to get to a healthy weight for me. I will always be tall and skinny, it is in our DNA. I decided then that I don’t care about what diet anyone is on. I don’t care what workout you do. I do what works for me. That means in the morning I drink a half a cup of warm water with apple cider vinegar to keep my body in an alkaline state. I follow that with tea and almond milk. Around 2 in the afternoon I have a SuperFood Smoothie that I make. It’s always a little different but I know I am getting the nutrients I need. It’s simple, a handful of spinach and baby kale, some Spirulina, some ginger, half of an avocado and a handful of frozen fruit. Some days I add a whole lemon and some parsley. I do not eat white food. I do not eat sugar. I eat fish occasionally and a boiled egg twice a week. This program has allowed me to keep weight on and avoid flares. Unless there is nutritional value in it, I don’t eat it.

It’s especially difficult when you live with a meat and potatoes person. Even though the said person has enough of his own health issues he needed to deal with. Finally, however, OU Boy came around to the non-white foods and no meat lifestyle. He started getting compliments and so he joined my workout. His cardiologist told him he had never looked better and if he kept it up he could go off the blood pressure meds! He has kept it up and working out together is lots of fun. He even drinks the smoothies.

And that is what I do. No fad, quick weight-loss crap for me. I don’t need to lose weight or get in shape so I would appreciate all of those “coaches” on IG leaving me alone. I’m not a joiner and I don’t believe in Multi-level Marketing schemes. So don’t @ me!

    I’ve been trying to eliminate as many of the “white” foods from my diet as possible. I’m not celiac, but diabetic, so some similar dietary adjustments wouldn’t hurt me. I’m impressed with your tenacity in sticking with what’s good for you!

    Celiac disease is awful and I know this because my good doctor friend and gastroenterologist Dr Lui HF is treating me for IBS. I get tummy runs after whatever I eat! Stomach disorders are bad and yours just sounds really bad. I am glad you are keeping chipper and well. Please take care.

    thanks for sharing your story. I had surgery for colorectal cancer 20 years ago and I have a permanent ostomy. That all worked out well but scar tissue from the surgery has led to problems as I can have blockages in my small intestine where there are adhesions. I had one about 2 months ago and was in hospital for 5 days but mercifully it resolved itself. i am not on a low fiber diet. So I am eating white bread, no avocados, and spinach without the stems. It is going ok so far. We all have to do what works for us and our own unique body systems. Good to know yours works well for you!

    I’m glad to know your story. It’s wonderful that your husband has gone along with you. John changed his diet when I was diagnosed with diabetes, and it has been good for both of us. My sugar levels are back to pre-diabetes numbers, and John’s cardiologist says he is doing everything right.

    Wow that was some road you traveled to get where you are. I have GI issues and there are a boatload of foods I no longer eat. I don’t miss them because they made me sick. Kudos to you for finding your way. Also don’t need a coach or schemes. Just peace, quiet and happiness!
