Almond Sunset Tea with Almond Tea Loaf

Hello Tuesday! Sun shining bright and temps in the 70’s. Yesterday was one of those days when it felt good to open the windows and let the house air out. It was also a baking day.

I baked a loaf of Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread for OU Boy’s crew. And put three more in the freezer. Since I bought a ton of apples, squash, pumpkin, and eggs over the weekend, I made a Dutch Apple Pie, a vegetable pot pie and a lovely and delicate Almond Tea Loaf. The Veg Pie was a huge hit for dinner last night. Followed up with the apple pie. I had some new recipes I was working on and while if you know apples, “people” say some are better for pies than others. My entire life I have followed those rules. But I was curious and used what we eat. Honeycrisp apples. And it made all the difference in the world. The apples were not mushy but kept their shape and a tiny firmness to the bite. I’ll never go back to other apples! The Almond Tea Loaf is a recipe from my grandmother. So easy but packed with flavor. This morning I’m pairing it with a cup of Celestial Seasonings Almond Sunset and the smell alone is heaven, but together it felt decadent.

The weekend was packed full of goodness. I only go to the market once a month and we were at the can of peas and some hummus stage of available food. So I stocked up on apples and all the squashes. Almost soup time!

Friday night we had a blast with the kids at Cleveland Elementary. The multi-cultural night was a hit! Between the dancers from all cultures, and the food. Oh my goodness the food.

We hit up Peru, Iran, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Republic of China, Ireland, Scotland, Africa and more. We passed out passports to the kids and they had to get a stamp from each country.

Saturday OU had an 11:00 a.m. game, so we headed to Whiskey Cake Cafe’ for brunch and watching the game. I had the Goat Cheese Fondue, which was delicious. Goat cheese with olive oil, 3 types of olives, garlic, and tiny roasted tomatoes. With grilled sourdough bread. Instead of a mimosa, I had a freshly juiced Beetlejuice. Beet juice with green apples. It was good. Then we found a new home for Arya.

Arya the Budgie moving to a tri-plex

It’s fancy and has lots of toys and she loves it. This morning OU Boy found her hanging upside down like a bat. When he questioned her she flew to the mirror and just stared at herself. He thinks she’s part bat, I think the girl is just getting in a workout!

It’s Tuesday so I am busy pushing the books that released today and then who knows? Maybe a nice long walk in the neighborhood to see if that pumpkin beacon is back!

Celestial Seasoning’s Vermont Maple Ginger Tea and Shopping

The last Friday of September and it’s not only still hot but the wind is trying to blow Texas all the way to Kansas!

Yesterday I drank this tea all day. It was just that good. I did drop one drop of Maple Syrup in there and what a treat that was!

First, thank you all for your suggestions and good thoughts. This was probably the worst flare-up I’ve had. At one point I wasn’t sure if I had a kidney stone or if this was just another Crohn’s thing.  It is a vicious circle of pain which leads to anxiety and can quickly become depression. Last night I ate solid food. It stayed down.

My energy level is way up and except for a small amount of bloating, I’m doing better.

I think it looks like a cute little baby bump. This was yesterday and today it’s pretty much back to normal. Steroids are a bitch for bloating and other nasty side effects, but they work.

The funny (odd) thing about Gastro diseases is one day a certain food is okay for you and the next you’re doubled over in pain. It’s all trial and error. Food becomes the enemy. Once a day I have my Spinach/Kale/Parsley/Pineapple/Wild Blueberry Smoothie with some Spirulina, Chia Seeds and Moringa Powder, maybe some fresh ginger. My doctor had me add a half teaspoon of Coconut Oil to the mix to help me digest it better. So I know I’m getting my nutrients. Now that Fall is here (somewhere) things will be easier because I can digest the heck out of some root veg and squash soups. Parsnip-Apple Soup is my favorite.

Totally out of the blue, but do y’all know about Brad’s Deals? Every morning in my email I get a list of the best deals ever! Secret type deals. Today’s was Cheryl’s assortment of gourmet Halloween cookies. Shipping included it was $10.85! They are so good and gorgeous as well, so I ordered enough to ship to my mom and Miss Evangeline as well as some for a photoshoot! They also right now have the Amazon Fire Bundle that sells for around $170.00 for $45. Heck yeah, I ordered two of those! Christmas is coming. I have been ordering from them for a long time and I have never once been disappointed. I found my mom a Kate Spade handbag for 75% off. No, I don’t work for them, but here is the link. Guard it. Click Here

Find something good today! And thank you all for being you!

The Crohn’s Fairy brings the Anxiety Fairy to Tea.

Good Thursday Morning Y’all! Yes, I’m here. Again. While I love my book blog, it is mostly for work and I don’t feel as comfortable writing personal things there. Here, I don’t need a filter.

So, what’s been going on? Well not only did the Crohn’s Fairy pop by but she brought her nasty sister, the Anxiety Fairy. They go hand in hand. Last Monday I had a doctor’s appointment and was told if I lost another pound I would be in the hospital with a feeding tube. Since my last year-long flare when I looked like a malnourished child, I’ve been vigilant about my diet, exercise, and stress management. Running is my drug of choice and it helps stress and makes me feel strong. But little did I know that there was a bomb ticking somewhere else that would impact my health in a big way.

Someone I have loved and respected for a lot of years suddenly called me on the phone and proceeded to verbally attack me over something I had not done. I didn’t even understand what she was talking about and I’m not sure she did either. OU Boy heard the call and was in shock. Was she on drugs? Having a mental breakdown? WTF?

And just like that, I can’t eat. My anxiety is at level 10 and that one pound went quickly. My main goal was to be able to make it to the book festival with Scott Pelley. I did that and came straight home and couldn’t move for days. Crohn’s flares leave you unable to even lift your arm, much less eat.

What happened? I said, Screw this shit, this bitch isn’t worth dying for! So I ran. And ran and felt better and ate broth and drank copious amounts of herbal teas. And blocked her on every outlet I have. Sure, words are free, but the way you use them will cost you. I thought it would be so much more difficult than it was to just chop off the toxic crap, but it wasn’t at all. Much like Trump said yesterday, that to him Pelosi was no longer the speaker of the house, I said, you are no longer in my world.

This morning I brought all the Fall teas to the front of the cabinet, even though it was in the 90’s yesterday. And every night it rains so it’s humid and hot. It makes it hard to get in the Fall mood. But my that Vermont Maple herbal tea this morning made me want to wear boots.

Thanks for listening!

Decaf India Spice Chai and a Chilling Tale

This Celestial Seasonings Decaf India Spice Chai is so delicious. I love a good cup of Chai and own several brands. This Decaf one allows me to drink it in the afternoon as well. And oh my this chilling tale You Fit The Pattern by Jane Haseldine.

Since OU Boy has taken over another hotel, I have lots of time on my own. It always takes a lot of work to get things organized and hire new people and this means I can read a lot!

So a tale!  I thought my stalker had finally given up. Nope. Somehow she knows where I live. And left me a little message letting me know. I filed a report and hope that will be enough. This morning I had to call the FBI. I received an email from some toad who said he had gotten my password, which he shared and it was a years old password that I used only on Linkedin. He says he has accessed my computer and unless I pay him $800 he is going to release a video of me “pleasuring myself”. Yep. That is what he said. Obviously, I wasn’t going to reply to him. I called the FBI and gave them the email and his IP address.

What I wanted to do was tell the toad to go ahead, hell, even I would like to see that video! In my logical brain, I knew there was no way he had squat. My computer is in the office and I don’t do that there. Who knows? That is how the Kardashians got famous and I’m sure mine would be better.

So that’s how my day started. Now I am going to sit back and watch the Mueller testimony and watch the trumpster lose what is left of his mind. Speaking of, Hey UK, what the heck were you thinking? Boris? Really? Have you not learned from our mistakes?

Bringing Back The Summer Teas

Friday and the sun is out and it isn’t supposed to rain! Hallelujah! After finishing up painting the tea cupboard and table and chairs, it was time to organize the teas. Fall and Winter went to the back and I found 3 boxes of this Lemon Lavender Lane, which I love, and Lavender and Honey Spoons.  Along with my 2 little teapot salt and pepper shakers.

That entire cabinet is full of tea and teaware. And I’m waiting on a shipment now.  I have spent the last few days occupying a lounge chair at the pool. Today I need to stay inside. My bum is burnt.

I love the Lemon Lavender Lane Tea by Celestial Seasoning. It’s so calming as a warm nighttime drink and delicious as an iced drink! Plunk in some lemon slices and Voila’!

I am feeling especially smug today. I’ve already mailed my June birthday cards and I’ve wrapped Father’s Day gifts!

It has been so wet here that we had to re-pot several plants and move the hostas. Yesterday I went to blow my pool float up with the thing I call the blower upper. You plug it in the outlet and air goes into your float. Only you know how you really have to cap that float off quick or the air comes right back out? I didn’t want that to happen so I tossed the blower upper into a chair, still blowing and capped off my float. I go to pick up the blower upper and apparently I had tossed it too hard and the back fell off. I didn’t know that until I picked it up and left part of my pointer finger skin on the coils. Shocked the shit out of me and burnt my finger horribly. It was numb but my entire hand hurt! I called Tommy who quickly offered to come and make sure I wasn’t dying or having any erratic heartbeats. But no, I told him I could wait. He made me check my heartbeat though which is hard to do since I have a very low resting heart rate.

Around 3 I couldn’t take the pain anymore and this thing was filling up with fluid so I found my guys that I have dubbed the bandanna gang and one whipped out a knife and cut that thing open and bodily fluids came out and the pain went away. They told me to put mustard on it to draw the heat. I did. But it smelled good so I licked it.

That is our week in a weird nutshell! I hope you had an entertaining week as well!

Dear Rain, Yes or No on the Ark?

Saturday in the rain. Again. Seriously enough. Yesterday was a good day. I decided to make lunch and some tea. Honestly, I only ate the strawberries. But tea! I tossed in a Celestial Seasonings Mountain Chai and a small homemade bag of turmeric. Turmeric is an amazing spice. I use it for a lot of things. It just doesn’t have the best taste by itself. But this was really good. Do you ever mix different teas?

This morning I woke up with a headache. The rain and allergies are adding to the pressure in my head and it is miserable.

Tommy played in a golf tournament yesterday. Personal best for him. He came home with prizes and swag bags! Now I am the proud owner of my own tall Yeti and a tumbler for my tea! Lots of notepads, golf tees, hand sanitizer, and a small duffle bag. There was snack stuff too. Also a bottle of Jack Daniels and 2 Thunder glasses. Those did not make it to me as I don’t drink that.  I do love goodie bags. I’m like a 5 year old at a birthday party.

Since I overdid it yesterday on screen time, I am being very good today.  I hope everyone has a lovely Saturday. We’ll be over here working on the ark.

A Spot of Tea and a Funny Tale

Thursday and I am still in bed. With a lot of Tummy tea and an ice pack on my head.

Still no super hero abilities. This is my little bit of screen time today. Checking in to see if everyone has better weather than we do. Enough with the rain already!

I do have one funny story. My Momma is living totally out of her element right now. After my Daddy passed, we all knew he wanted to be buried with his entire family in Bottineau, North Dakota. So my Momma moved up there too since I have a sister living there. It is a tiny town that I spent all of my summers out at the farm. So yesterday I called the local florist to have some flowers sent to my Momma.

Me: Hello I would like to order an arrangement for my Momma

Her: (Imagine a Norwegian accent) Okay then, and her name?

Me: Barbara

Her: Patty? Is that you?

Me: Uh, yes.

Her: Oh my goodness how’s your eye? Don’t you worry about a thing, I’ll get over to Barbs tomorrow morning with something really cheery.

Me: Ok thanks. Who is this?

Her: Cathy Olson from the farm.

Me: Hi Cathy! How are you? It’s good to hear your voice

Her: You just go back to bed now. Take care of that head!

That is how small the town is. I never gave an address even. And sure enough my Momma sent me a text and a picture of the flowers this morning.

I love these people!

AT THIS POINT WE ARE REALLY JUST WINGING IT!

Piratepatty

Oh the many shades of yellow this time of year! As we were driving to multiple baseball practices yesterday evening we saw so many beautiful flowers. One home was surrounded by white tulips. It was a very bold choice but it worked very well.

I am basically just mainlining Chai today. You know the saying, ” Man plans and God laughs”….yep. I was prepared for anything. Except a last-minute field change for Charli Ava. We were dropped off and the boys headed for the Boathouse District for Corbin’s practice. Long story short, my girl got on base every time she hit and got stuck on second flirting with a boy on second and the little boy on first just ran around her. It was funny as heck. The team is made up of first timers and they all admitted to being nervous and scared. Having coached this age before I explained how things worked. Like what a bag is or a base. Somehow I’m now the Team Mom and will have snack duty for the rest of Spring.

Tommy picked us up and we all went to get Corbin. His Uncle was there with his little one. We arrive, James and Corbin have been horsing around and Corbin slid into a base and scraped his knee so now it’s blowing like crazy out and cold, Corbin is declaring his imminent demise while shoving muffin in his face and bleeding on my seats. Luckily we had a quick dinner before we left for the fields. Corbin couldn’t take a bath because he was dying and no one cared and if he got in the tub he would for sure die. Y’all know we are a dramatic bunch of Scots/Irish/Norwegian folks. We can spin a yarn, die on a daily basis and be stubborn as hell. So we chose not to fight this battle. Everyone was in bed on time and asleep soon after. Then we just sat there and stared at the blank television. Wondering if my Momma had wine. And is it okay to sleep in your clothes?

Around midnight or so we had a vicious storm move through. Big thunder and lightning which ended with Tommy sleeping in Corbins room until the storm passed. The only one who was an adult was Charli. She gets up as soon as the alarm goes off, makes her bed, hits up the bathroom rituals and eats breakfast she made herself. We had to re-bandage the scraped knee and get our Picture Day clothes on. By the time they were all out the door with lunches and backpacks I was understanding why my mother was always in a bad mood. Tommy just looked at me and said, “Thank you for not getting knocked up!”. My pleasure dude.

Corbin suggested that he call in sick on Friday because we needed to rest. I’m not one bit ashamed of at least thinking about it. But no activities tonight so it should be calmer. Should.

To all of you moms and dads out there getting your kids to school and practices on time…I salute you!  To the mom at practice who agreed it is okay to Uber them, I have wine now. Come over.

THE USPS IS SHADY AF!

Friday! My goodness I’m glad you are here! This is one of the teas I received the other day. I wasn’t sure what to expect. It is Caffeine Free and full of ginger, cinnamon, Natural Vermont Maple Sugar and Luo Han Guo. I brewed a pot and used two bags since it was a big pot. I let it steep for 4 minutes.

I’m going to call this one Vermont Maple Fudge. With a back note of sharp ginger left on your tongue. It is delicious. I didn’t get a strong aroma from the bag but the steeped tea smelled like ginger, cinnamon and maple fudge. It was so good I drank the entire pot!

It helped a bit yesterday. Which was insane and I lost a half days work to stay on hold with the post office trying to figure out why I received a text saying they were unable to deliver my package as no one was home. I tried explaining that was a lie. He never got out of the truck. I have cameras. He never came to my door. And I paid extra for it to be delivered yesterday. The post office could not have been more anal. I was so upset after holding for an hour and 46 minutes that I took to Twitter! Works every time. The rep asked if I would like to reschedule the delivery and I told her I would be uploading video of the guy sitting in his car and lying to them and me if it wasn’t here today. Then I went to all of my vendors and switched to FedEx. Here is what I found out yesterday.

UPS was supposed to deliver it. I paid extra. They delivered it to OKC and then they hand it off to the local post office. What??? Yep this is normal practice. So here I am today sitting by the front door ready to unload on this guy when I get another notice that my publisher has sent me something and it should be here today. Through UPS.  (pulls hair out).

We shall see. In the meantime I have to get back to my post by the sofa.

Have a great weekend!!! And try this tea and let me know what you thought!

Dying Easter Eggs With Tea and Those Damn Fairies!

Good Morning!  Doing some experimenting with tea dyed eggs today. I really love the softness of the colors. I opened one of the eggs I used black tea on and inside the white was a lovely marbling that I adored. Also the egg was tasty. Quality control. Tough job.

The Anxiety Fairy brought her ugly sister The Doubt Fairy and parked their baggage all over my poor brain. We have been through a lot this past year and just as I was evening out all the wires got crossed. I found myself looking for a fight. I blocked a sister on social media. I sent Tommy to work on his day off. It was awful.

So I sat down with The Get Your Shit Together Fairy and she told me to talk to Tommy. Bounce concerns off him and get his input. Now I try never to bounce anything off Tommy. Because he is a guy and they usually want to ‘fix’ it instead of just listening and offering suggestions. So I wrote it all down and called him home and told him my head was in chaos and therefore my life was in chaos.

He pointed out that I have a hard time saying no and maybe a trip to the antique mall would help calm me down and then maybe to the library to smell books.  I found the perfect planner and program to keep track of all my book reviews. In the end I had a new kitchen table, some fine books, a baby pie and the two end tables we had been looking for to go in the workout/reading room. Then he spent the rest of the night helping me get everything organized in my planner. I love him.

He even tried Yoga for a hot minute. Now that my house and my business are in order the two hoochie fairies in my head slunk out the door. I am so grateful to have someone who loves me so much that he takes the psycho me along with the kind me.

Since my son and his wife are flying to D.C. the first week of April to pick up a school bus and drive it back, Corbin and Charli Ava will be with us. That means getting up earlier and making breakfasts and lunches. And one of those days is picture day for Corbin, who will try to sneak his Nike outfit in his book bag. So my comb and hairspray will be at school that day. Normally they wear uniforms so on a non uniform day he wants to show off his new outfit. Not happening.

Miss Charli Ava is staying over Friday night so she can be with me at 2 book signings on Saturday. One in Edmond and one in Norman. Opposite ends of I-35, but we’ll make it work. In the meantime I’m just not watching news anymore. I am waiting for Queen Elizabeth to send in the troops as it is glaringly obivous we can not govern ourselves. We need a do-over bad!

Have a good Wednesday and thanks for listening to me. It really does help knowing you aren’t alone!
